Plants That Last in Central Texas
Waco's Blackland Prairie clay is heavy and alkaline, summers run 95–100°F for weeks, and city water restrictions show up most dry years. We plant accordingly:
- Full sun, low water: Texas sage (cenizo), Texas lantana, salvia greggii (autumn sage), rock rose, damianita, dwarf yaupon holly, Lindheimer muhly and other native grasses
- Part shade: dwarf Burford holly, Turk's cap, columbine, inland sea oats, hostas in protected spots
- Structure / evergreen: Indian hawthorn (trim right after bloom), boxwood in protected beds, dwarf wax myrtle
- Seasonal color: periwinkle (vinca) and angelonia for summer heat; pansies, snapdragons and dianthus for the cool season
We steer away from plants that get sold everywhere but struggle here long-term in unamended clay — azaleas, gardenias, and thirsty tropicals — unless you're set on them and want a raised, amended bed.

How often should shrubs be trimmed here?
Most Waco hedges want 2–3 trims a year: a hard shaping cut in late winter, a cleanup in early summer, and a light fall touch-up. We avoid heavy shearing in peak heat and wait until after bloom on spring-flowering shrubs.
How often does mulch need refreshing?
Once a year for most beds, usually in spring. Central Texas heat breaks mulch down in about 12 months. We weed, re-edge, and top up to 2–3 inches rather than burying the old layer.
What plants survive Waco clay and heat?

Is bed work included with mowing?
It's a separate line item. Mowing covers turf, edging and trimming; bed weeding, shrub trimming and mulch are quoted on their own. Many customers bundle a monthly bed check with mowing.
